Android XR, the new platform developed by Google in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm, and google want android XR on everything. This platform wants to make XR an everyday thing and not just a tool or toy that you play with.

What is Android XR?

Android XR is an OS (operating system) designed for XR (extended reality, an umbrella term that encompasses both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR)). It is built from the ground up to leverage multimodal AI (artificial intelligence that can different types of inputs) thus enabling devices to understand and respond to interactions through voice, hands, and eyes.

Samsung’s VR Headset

Samsung is on path to fulfill there promise they made in July, where they hinted at its forthcoming “XR Platform”, which they have developed in partnership with Google and Qualcomm. They recently confirmed this in an event where Android XR was unveiled.

This is first device designed for Android XR, code-named Project Moohan (meaning “Infinity” in Korean), is being built by Samsung and is expected to launch this year.

The Samsung headset combines elements of existing headsets like the Apple Vision Pro, Quest Pro, and the Quest Elite, and it will include a rigid strap for added comfort. While the headset will use the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, a more powerful version than that used in the Quest 3.

The rumurs are that XReal One AR glasses will have official support for Android XR. The XReal One AR glasses are the latest addition to XReal’s growing lineup of AR wearables. Known for their sleek design and innovative features, XReal has established itself as a key player in the AR market.

While marketed as AR glasses, the XReal One is primarily a wearable monitor rather than a fully interactive augmented reality device. This can be changed with the addition of Android XR.

The XReal One offers an equivalent of a 147-inch display at a 4-meter distance, with the ability to adjust the size to anywhere between 32 inches and 400 inches. The glasses provide a 50° field of view (FoV), up from 46° in the previous models, and a resolution that ensures crisp, vibrant visuals.

Lynx R1: The French take on XR

Lynx is a French company that released its first mixed reality headset Lynx R1 in February 2024. It offers open platform in VR and AR for entertainment, gaming, education and professionals training. Google wants to promote this type of future where you will have XR devices made by different company and the operating system of Android XR (just like smartphones).

It stands out for its free form prism optics that literally looks like one lens being split into four parts.

Google’s AR Glasses

Last but not least Google’s own in house AR glasses. The glasses will have the capability to provide real-time information and translate languages, turning the world into an interactive landscape.

While there isn’t much information about techical specification, it’s safe to assume that Google is not going to pull punches when its there last chance.

Augmented Reality (AR) is an experience or a medium through which we can bring and interact with our imagination ( content created with computer-like characters, objects, etc) in the real world. 

When will Samsung launch its Headset?

 Samsung won’t release the XR headset until the latter part of 2025 or it may take up to 2026. Although the company has been continuously working on the capabilities and functioning of the headset.
