EE267: Virtual Reality :This is a technical class. Students will learn about all hardware (optics, electronics, display, microcontroller, …) and software (JavaScript, WebGL, GLSL) aspects of Virtual Reality (VR). The goal for this class is to learn all of these aspects in a hands-on manner. Each assignment is a small piece of a bigger project. The goal for each student or small team of students is to build a fully functional head mounted display, including optics, display, IMU, rendering, lens distortion shader, model loader etc., from off-the-shelf parts. The HMD we will build is inspired by the Oculus DK1. We will NOT learn game development, but study the fundamental building blocks of VR systems and implement all of them.

Prerequisites

  • Coding Experience (especially JavaScript, C/C++)
All lab assignments will be in either JavaScript (WebGL) or C++ (Arduino). Even though we don’t assume prior experience in JavaScript and GLSL, you should be able to understand object-oriented programs and modify them.
  • Linear Algebra (e.g. MATH 51)
We will use matrix transpose, inverse, and other operations to do algebra with matrix expressions. We’ll use transformation matrices to rotate/transform points. These topics are important for the homeworks. If you are a quick learner, you should be able to learn them during the class if you haven’t yet.
  • Basics of Computer Graphics and/or Computer Vision (helpful but NOT required

The UW Reality Lab is a super cool place where students from all sorts of programs can team up with awesome professors and classmates! Launched in 2018 and located in the Allen School, this lab is packed with exciting opportunities.

You can dive into the Reality Studio, where you’ll explore the amazing world of AR and VR. Or, you can join the Reality Lab Incubator and work on cutting-edge projects in areas like:

  • Distributed computing, stream processing, databases and computer architecture – Building the backbone of powerful computer systems.
  • 3D computer vision and perception – Teaching computers to see the world in 3D!
  • Object recognition – Helping computers recognize objects, just like we do.
  • Graphics – Creating stunning visuals that will blow your mind.
  • Game science and education – Designing fun and educational games.
