Samsung is set to unveil it’s XR glasses. This report is coming from South Korea’s Yonhap News. According to report samsung is set to unveil a XR product at its annual unpacked event. The event is expected to take place in next month thought exact date are yet to be disclosed.
Samsung is on path to fulfill there promise they made in July, where they hinted at its forthcoming “XR Platform”, which they are developing in partnership with Google and Qualcomm.
Samsung has yet to disclose information about this “XR platform” but rumors suggests that they are working on an Apple Vision Pro competitor and Ray band meta competitior as reported by The Information in October.
According to Yonhap News report Samsung is expected to unveil some kind of device on stage, they also suggest it to be “regular glasses or sunglasses, and weigh[ing] around 50g.”
The report highlights that the device is anticipated to feature payment capabilities, gesture recognition, and facial recognition. Industry insiders predict the product will likely debut around Q3 2025. Additionally, its Android-powered XR software is expected to be revealed later this month.
Yonhap refers to the device as “AR glasses” (as per google translation from Korean), but its rumored lightweight design and the absence of references to built-in displays indicate it might function more like Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses rather than resembling Meta’s Orion AR glasses prototype.
If Samsung is indeed gearing up to launch smart glasses rather than a fully-fledged AR device, it would be entering a burgeoning market with strong precedent. Meta’s collaboration with Ray-Ban on smart glasses has been highly successful since their debut in 2021, leading Meta to extend its partnership with parent company EssilorLuxottica through 2030. Similarly, Xiaomi is reportedly working on its version of smart glasses with long-time ODM partner Goertek, with the device expected to rival Ray-Ban Meta’s offerings.
Adding to this speculation is Samsung’s recent activity around trademarks for XR-related devices. In mid-2023, the company filed the name “Samsung Glasses” with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office, followed by a similar application in early 2024 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for “Galaxy Glasses.” These filings suggest Samsung is actively preparing for a significant entry into the XR market.
As for the launch, Samsung has yet to confirm the date for its next Unpacked event, traditionally held in January or February. However, a report from Android Police suggests the date may have leaked, pointing to January 23, 2024, in San Francisco, California. Whether this event will unveil the rumored smart glasses or other next-gen XR devices remains to be seen, but anticipation is undoubtedly building.
