According to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has ditched Apple AR Glasses, causing uproar in the AR industry. Apple wanted to make everyday wearable AR glasses and it was supposed to be the next big thing from Apple that would have changed everything just like they did with the launch of Macbooks and iPhones.

However, due to persistent technological and manufacturing challenges, the company has decided to put the project on hold indefinitely.

This is a major setback not only for Apple but also for the whole AR Industry as the experts on the topic believed that Apple joining the field would have given much-needed exposure but with this not only did they miss on spotlight. This will negatively impact the development as many investors will hesitate to put money in an Industry where potentially major player pulls back.

Industry experts pointed out that some key issues such as battery life, and display miniaturization, with slim and sleek, consumer-friendly designs are proving too difficult to overcome with current technology. Despite years of research and development, Apple has reportedly been unable to deliver a product that meets its high standards.

Apple’s decision to abandon its AR glasses is a reminder that even the most ambitious tech companies face limitations. While Apple is known for revolutionizing industries first with personal computers, then smartphones, and later with wearables like the Apple Watch and AirPods augmented reality presents unique challenges.

The current state of technology simply isn’t there yet. Battery constraints, overheating issues, and the difficulty of integrating complex displays into a sleek, everyday wearable remain unsolved problems. Additionally, the market demand for AR glasses is still uncertain. Unlike smartphones, which had a clear utility from the start, AR glasses are still searching for their killer application. Without a compelling use case that justifies the cost and technical limitations, mass adoption is unlikely.

Tech giants like Meta, Google, and Microsoft have also been investing heavily in AR, betting on it as the next major computing platform. However, if Apple one of the most resourceful and innovative companies has paused its AR glasses project, it raises concerns about whether the broader industry is overestimating how soon the technology will be ready.

Without that push, AR may continue to develop in niche markets rather than become a mainstream consumer product soon.

While this decision may slow the progress of AR innovation, it also highlights Apple’s commitment to only releasing products when they meet its exacting standards.

Author’s Thoughts on Apple Ditching Apple AR Glasses

While it would have been great to have Apple AR Glasses in the scene of AR tech it’s a major setback for the company as well as enthusiasts who are working on AR Technology. We should not be too worried about this every revolutionary technology has gone through a similar phase where some big company deems that it’s not worthy of its attention and some pour everything into the same thing.

In the end, no one knows what will happen in the future or when will AR become mainstream but the next big thing will be AR (we just don’t know when). And it’s not that AR will die because of this. Despite this setback, I know developer will continue with their effort to make AR a tech that will revolutionize different industries and likely will find its place in the daily life of the general public, especially those who travel.

Even Apple will not abandon AR altogether they will keep developing it through the iPhone and iPad with ARKit enabling advanced applications in gaming, shopping, and productivity. Additionally, advancements in AI and display technology could eventually revive the Apple AR Glasses project when the technology matures.
